Imagine if you could give your Child a unique advantage by identifying their learning trends and developing interests and skills as early and as accurately as possible…

Our newly invented model lets you “visualise” your child’s entire learning history and learning directions – all on one evolving ”live” Roots and Shoots diagram.

After listening for many years to the wishlists of parents, early childhood education teachers and primary school teachers, we invented a new and easy way to visualise learning and development for your child during their years at daycare.

Your child’s learning and development can now be displayed all on one growing & evolving diagram that provides a “quick click” lookup of all learning stories & observations made by our teachers.  This is organised in “tree roots and branches” that represent Ministry of Education curriculum skills, while your child’s development outcomes are ordered chronologically as “leaves” growing naturally on each branch (a clever Kiwi invention!!). Furthermore, each leaf on your child’s tree can be clicked to open up that learning story which describes the learning outcomes for your child that day, week or month – how cool is that????

This is a unique feature exclusively available via a parent portal called KID REPORTS and can not be found with any other parent portal or e-portfolio software in NZ (although we are happy to migrate your child’s existing portfolio into Kid Reports and start their new Roots and Shoots tree when they join us).  This award winning invention has even gained international attention and interest, but for now we are content to ensure as many NZ parents and families can discover and benefit from this unique advantage for their child.

We call it
“Learning Roots & Shoots”

1) It’s simple

2) It copies nature

(A clever problem solving process called “biomimicry” which looks at the result of millions of years of nature’s trials, life forms, perfections and patterns for inspiration to solve today’s technical problems)

3) Every parent or teacher who has seen it… loves it!

The model is based on a clever analogy as follows:

“Roots” are the invisible part of a tree that:

  • are hidden within (i.e. just like hidden potential, interests, skills, etc in your child)
  • absorb nutrients (i.e. just like learning from teachers, family and the environment)
  • hold the foundations steady for growth of the entire tree

“Shoots” are the visible part that:

  • reveal the fruits, flowers, leaves, branches
  • just like the visible outcomes of learning and in particular, show which directions the skills and learning are growing in for your child.

Extending our philosophy through mimicry of nature, centre parents can log in to view their child’s entire portfolio and learning outcomes in a holistic manner. Presently, learning stories written by most Early Childhood Education centres are filed in a hard copy folder for the child and parent to view. Some centres also make e-portfolios which are accessible online for parents and family to view (as is the case in our centres too). But in addition to having regular learning stories that link the learning to general curriculum outcomes, our teachers can go the extra step to link similar skills, interests and developments together (i.e. similar colour coded leaves on branches) throughout the child’s time at the centre to enable parents to visualise the emerging developments in a 12 month branch, 24 month or 5 year view using this new tool.

What do people think of
Learning Roots & Shoots?

Roots & Shoots is an award-winning, online and patented technology that gives our centre parents a unique and exclusive advantage to visualise their Child’s learning progress literally “growing” on branches of their Child’s live learning tree. See what people are saying about it below…

“LEARNING ROOTS & SHOOTS” WAS THE WINNING INVENTION AT THE 2013 NZ EARLY CHILDHOOD COUNCIL / TELECOM NZ INNOVATION AWARD – Presented to Nikeeta Singh (owner of Chrysalis Group of Early Learning Centres), by Hon. Hekia Parata, Minister of Education.

“Learning Roots & Shoots is an amazing concept. The colour coordinated roots makes seeing (my son’s) strengths and development areas instantly from the clusters of leaves or the absence of leaves on the shoots.”
– Mrs Werner (centre parent)

“You have a really awesome way of sharing and communicating kids’ stories! Very impressed.”
– Mrs Wheatcroft (centre parent)

“A useful and innovative framework for documenting children’s learning, interests, next steps and life contexts, which includes child and parent voice.”
– Education Review Office

“Roots & Shoots makes my life as a teacher much easier. I can look back and link stories together as they are easily accessible and right in front of me when I’m on the computer writing a new story.”
– Mrs Spencer, Fully Registered Teacher

“This innovation demonstrates impressive collaboration between children, centre staff and parents…incorporating an effective blend of service and technology supporting a child’s learning.” – Judging panel (President of the NZ Early Childhood Council, CEO of NZ Business Excellence Foundation, Ministry of Education, and Telecom Senior Executives)
