We are the inventors of the award winning, online and patented technology that gives our centre parents a unique and exclusive advantage to visualise their Child’s learning progress literally “growing” on branches of their Child’s live learning tree (read on)…
The judging panel (i.e. President of the NZ Early Childhood Council, CEO of NZ Business Excellence Foundation, Ministry of Education and Telecom Senior Executives) noted: “This innovation demonstrates impressive collaboration between children, centre staff and parents….incorporating an effective blend of service and technology supporting a child’s learning”.
Imagine if you could give your Child a unique advantage by identifying their learning trends and developing interests and skills as early and as accurately as possible??
Our newly invented model lets you “visualise” your child’s entire learning history and learning directions – all on one evolving”live” Roots and Shoots diagram (a clever Kiwi invention!!”).
After listening for many years to the wishlists of parents, Early Childhood Education teachers and primary school teachers, we have invented a new and easy way to visualise learning and development for your child during their years at daycare.
Your child’s learning and development throughout their years in Early Childhood Education can now be displayed all on one growing & evolving diagram that provides a “quick click” lookup (organised chronologically and by skills) of all learning stories & observations made by our teachers. This is a unique feature & it is proving very popular with our parents & teachers – taking the existing technology of e-portfolios one step further!
We call it “LEARNING ROOTS and SHOOTS” and like any good idea:
1) it is simple,
2) it copies nature (a clever problem solving process called “biomimicry” which looks at the result of millions of years of nature’s trials, life forms, perfections and patterns for inspiration to solve today’s technical problems),
3) and best of all – every parent and teacher who has seen this LOVES IT!
The model is based on a clever analogy that:
• “roots” are the invisible part of a tree that: a) are hidden within (i.e. just like hidden potential, interests, skills, etc in your child), b) absorb nutrients (i.e. just like learning from teachers, family and the environment), and c) hold the foundations steady for growth of the entire tree.
• “shoots” are the visible part that reveal the fruits, flowers, leaves, branches (i.e. just like the visible outcomes of learning and in particular, which directions the skills and learning are growing in for your child).
Extending our philosophy through mimicry of nature, centre parents can log in to view their child’s entire portfolio and learning outcomes in a holistic manner. Presently, learning stories written by most Early Childhood Education centres are filed in a hard copy folder for the child and parent to view. Some centres also make e-portfolios which are accessible online for parents and family to view (as is the case in our centres too). But in addition to having learning stories each month that link the learning to general curriculum outcomes, our centre teachers can go the extra step to also identify the curriculum’s specific learning skills. PLUS they are now able to thread all of these skills and interests together throughout the child’s time at the centre to enable parents to visualise the emerging developments in a single view using this new tool.
And that’s the unique innovation…Parents (for the FIRST TIME) can visualise the entire learning portfolio, learning trends and new directions for their child in a single evolving live tree diagram each week and month as their child emerges and develops interests and skills during their most crucial early years.

This is another Kiwi invention by owner/operators of Chrysalis, inspired by the NZ Early Childhood Education curriculum (Te Whaariki). “Learning Roots” and “Learning Shoots” and “Learning Webs” are registered trademarks and the technology is patented in New Zealand (#608452) and patent pending in several countries.
